At Home With Expatriate Health
Insurance

Expatriate health insurance is designed specifically for people who will
be out of the United States for an extended time. Like any insurance,
expat plans can be geared to specific needs, especially to help those
who already have insurance understand how foreign health care systems
work and how their needs will be met (or not) overseas. Global insurance
plans can be tailored in the same fashion as the plans one has in the
U.S.
With the constant updating of American health care plans, one must be
aware what the existing policy will provide. A quick check of your HMO
or PPO policies will give you a clue but not much. Dan Jones, manager
of the Individual Health Department for Gemini Group Inc., a broker based
in Colorado, notes you dont want to wait until you get sick or become
injured abroad to find out what your plan covers.
Your and your familys health and plans dictate what coverage is
needed, just like determining what your policy at home covers. Age, existing
conditions and children are priority concerns. And, just like at home,
you can settle on a Lexus plan or a reliable old Ford model. If the area
of the world you are traveling to is deemed a high risk (natural disasters,
epidemics, political instability) your policy will be affected.
In todays tightly regulated insurance industry, one needs to make
sure that the insurer is licensed in your home state. If not, state regulators
cant order the insurance company to pay the bills.
Expatriate health insurance coverage doesnt have to be complicated,.
But travelers and those going abroad to work for extended periods will
enjoy their home away from home if they take the time to find the right
plan before they leave.
